C’est en gros ce qu’a déclaré Todd Akin, membre de la Chambre des Représentants et candidat républicain aux élections sénatoriales de novembre prochain pour l’état du Missouri. Todd Akin dit exactement ceci : “legitimate rape” rarely produces pregnancy because the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. You know I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.” En précisant le plus sérieusement du monde que cette affirmation est base sur des observations des médecins. Au pays de la science, on se demande comment un politique a priori éduqué peut déclarer de telles sottises. Paradoxe, Todd Akin (son CV sur le site de la Chambre des Représentants ; Il est diplômé d’une maîtrise en Management Engineering du Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts) est membre de la commission de la science, de l’espace et de la technologie.

Il va sans dire que Todd Akin est contre l’avortement, qu’il a participé à un projet de loi anti-avortement visant à limiter les fonds alloués aux institutions de santé qui le pratiquent et qu’il est contre la pilule du lendemain.
Dans un message twitter, Claire McCaskill, son opposant démocrate a écrit ceci : “As a woman & former prosecutor who handled 100s of rape cases,I’m stunned by Rep Akin’s comments about victims this AM”
Dans une sorte de service minimal écrit par le porte-parole de campagne Amanda Henneberg, Le ticket républicain Romney-Ryan s’est limité à exprimer son désaccord avec Todd Akin : “Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin’s statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape”.
Essayant de corriger mais sans doute en s’enfonçant un peu plus, Todd Akin a écrit les lignes suivantes :
“In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year,” Akin wrote. “Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.”
“I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue,” Akin continued. “But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action. I also recognize that there are those who, like my opponent, support abortion and I understand I may not have their support in this election.”
Let’s hope that Todd Akin is only one of a kind!
