Le refrain de la chanson de Phil Collins s’appliquait particulièrement aux quatre soirées de la Convention démocrate à Chicago lors de laquelle, quatre-vingt douze ans après Franklin Delanoe Rossevelt, Kamala Harris acceptait la nomination officielle de candidate démocrate aux élections présidentielles de 2024.

On behalf of my mother, and everyone who has ever set out on their own unlikely journey. On behalf of Americans like the people I grew up with – people who work hard, chase their dreams and look out for one another. On behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth, I accept your nomination to be president of the United States of America” déclarait avec solennité Kamala Harris ajoutant :

“And with this election, and – and with this election, our nation – our nation, with this election, has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism and divisive battles of the past, a chance to chart a new way forward. Not as members of any one party or faction, but as American”.

Si l’on en juge par les tweets publiés par Donald Trump sur son compte UnTruth Social, la convention démocrate a été un grand succès. Il est même allé jusqu’à appeler Fox News juste après le discours de la candidate démocrate pour répéter ses habituelles gérémiades et à rabacher ses inventions (70 % des Américains vivent dans la pauvreté). Jusqu’à impatienter les journalistes de la chaîne qui ont eu toutes les peines du monde à poser leurs questions.

Day 1

President Joe Biden delivered his valedictory address to the Democratic National Convention on Monday night, saying, “I gave my best to you” and basking in a long ovation that reflected the energy released by his decision to cede the stage to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Day 2

Day two of the DNC took a celebratory tone, with a keynote speech from former President Barack Obama touting the accomplishments of the administration of President Joe Biden– his former vice president– and Kamala Harris. He also worked to call out the urgency of this election by saying voters must rally around Harris in an effort against another possible Trump presidency.

Day 3

Day 3 of the Democratic National Convention was celebrity-filled and focused on a theme of “joy.” The keynote speaker of the evening, Gov. Tim Walz, accepted the party’s vice presidential nomination after a group of former students and athletes he coached introduced him on the national stage.

Day 4

Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination on the last night of the Democratic National Convention. Calling on her friends, family and former colleagues along with celebrities and fellow lawmakers, Harris on Thursday evening said that if she were to win the White House, she would “promise to be a president for all Americans.” Harris also touched on the war in Gaza, saying “President Biden and I are working to end this war such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security.”

Alors que les républicains n’avaient pas réussi à faire venir des présidents, des personnalités du parti républicain tranditionnel ou des anciens membres de cabinet de l’ex-président, le parti démocrate a fait le plein illustrant la continuité et non la rupture. Pour gagner les élections, il lui faudra aussi gagner les voix des indépendants et des républicains. Sur ce point, chaque donnait l’occasion de donner une tribune à un membre des Republicans for Harris

L’autre nouvelle, passée relativement inaperçue, est le retrait de RFK Jr qui, comme on pouvait si attendre a apporté son soutien à Donald Trump. JFK a dû se retourner dans sa tombe. Toute cette agitation totalement inutile aura coûé la bagatelle de 20 millions de dollars à sa colistière Nicole Shanahan. On peut s’attendre à une réponse de la dynastie.
