Dans une récente émission de radio sur la chaîne NPR, News Gingrinch a tenu des propos qui donnent la tonalité de ce pourra être la présidence Trump.
L’ancien speaker d’une Chambre des Représentants à majorité républicaine pour la première fois depuis 40 ans, s’était promis de « tout casser » avec son fameux Contrat pour l’Amérique. Dans leur livre respectif The Party is Over et Why The Right WentWrong, Mike Lofgren et E.J. FDionne détaille son rôle radical, voire malfaisant, lorsqu’il était le chef de la majorité républicaine de la Chambre des Représentants où il a bataillé de front avec Bill Clinton. En 1998, la défaite majeure des républicains aux élections du mid-term l’oblige à démissionner. Il a été l’un des candidats malheureux de la primaire de 2012.
Ses propos à l’émission de radio du lundi 19 décembre dernier sur les conflits d’intérêt entre les activités commerciales et la fonction de président de Donald Trump (Ongoing Questions About How Donald Trump Will Deal With Business Conflicts Of Interest As President), il a tenu des propos pour le moins surprenant.
Il a d’abord expliqué que Donald Trump devait résoudre ce problème de conflit d’intérêt au plus vite. Une question très complexe car Donald Trump est, dixit Newt Gingrinch, le personnage le plus fortuné s’installant à la Maison Blanche depuis George Washington (ce qui demanderait vérification mais une chose est sûre Donald Trump est certainement un des présidents les plus de toute l’histoire même s’il n’est pas aussi riche qu’il le prétend couramment. Rappelons qu’il n’a toujours publié sa déclaration de revenus). Jusqu’ici tout va bien.
Mais ensuite parlant de népotisme et de possibles attributions attribution de fonction à ses enfants à la Maison Blanche, Newt Gingrinch explique que Donald Trump nomme qui il veut à la Maison Blanche et que, en cas de violation des règles d’usage des dits proches, ce n’est pas grave car Donald Trump peut les absoudre (voir ci-dessous la transcription des propos de Newt Gingrinch).
Bref, les démocrates ont intérêt à préparer car les quatre années à venir vont être rudes.

President-elect Trump tweeted he will hand over control of his businesses before taking office. But he has yet to address how he will avoid financial conflicts of interest. Ethical concerns about Trump’s business empire as he enters the White House.
You’ve said we shouldn’t be surprised about the possible conflicts of interest we’re discussing here today. How come?
GINGRICH : Well I think for two very different reasons. First, you have somebody who is a billionaire, and we have not really dealt with this relative scale of wealth in the White House in some ways since George Washington, who may have been the wealthiest man in the colonies. So historically this is an unusual amount of economic interest and virtually impossible to isolate.
I mean, you can’t say that Trump Tower is not the Trump Tower or the Trump hotel is not the Trump hotel, and you can’t say that the kids who run it aren’t his children. So you go through all — you can do contortions, but the fact is these are facts, and they’re obvious. Second, the — it’s interesting story. The whole anti-nepotism thing is Lyndon Johnson’s reaction to Bobby Kennedy and the fact that Johnson Kennedy, and Kennedy had been attorney general under his brother and that it was a very narrowly focused bill really in reaction to a particular personality thing.
Prior to I think it was 1964 or ‘4, prior to that no one ever worried about it. I mean, it wasn’t something which came up. And so I think that it’s — you have to look at it in the context of what they were trying to accomplish. I think in the case of the president, he has a broad ability to organize the White House the way he wants to. He also has, frankly, the power of the pardon. I mean, it is a totally open power, and he could simply say look, I want them to be my advisors, I pardon them if anybody finds them to have behaved against the rules, period. And technically under the Constitution he has that level of authority.
